Golfers pitch in for Catholic Charities
By Chris
Donahue Some good sports helped raise $31,863.30 for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Metuchen in the 10th annual Invitational Golf Classic. Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski presented a check for that amount to Marianne Majewski, executive director of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, during a sponsor recognition luncheon at the Plainfield Country Club on Nov. 5. The money raised by the golf tournament will help bolster programs such as Family Financial Stabilization, which helps prevent a family from becoming homeless; Connections, a mentoring program for youth in need of positive adult role models; Housing Options Managed for the Elderly, and services such as health care for immigrants. "We’ve had kind of a tough year. And not just Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, but really all social services," Majewski said. "This allows us to serve those that no one is going to fund or serve — programs that are more mission-driven and say more about us as Catholics and who we need to be serving in the diocese. So it really helps a tremendous amount and we can make it go a very long way." The 11th annual tournament will be held in June once again at the Plainfield Country Club, said Father John Giordano, director of the event since its inception. Invitations will be sent in by April, he said. Businesses are welcome to sponsor or co-sponsor elements of the tournament, Father Giordano said. A post-tournament dinner is open to golfers and non-golfers alike and donations always go to charitable endeavors of the diocese, he said. A 50/50 raffle and a live auction also help raise money.
