Television trash needs to be disposed of
Regarding editor Rayanne Damiano’s (Oct. 2) article on bad television, several points struck a nerve with me. I think by now we are all aware of the gradual demise of family television. In the past the hour of 8-9 p.m. was reserved for families, but that no longer applies.
Specifically Damiano cites Judge Judy as an example of rude television. Years ago when she was a judge in a real court in New York I saw a story about her on a TV news show. Apparently her behavior toward attorneys was so rude and mean she developed an awful reputation. Is it any surprise that a television network saw this as any opportunity to create a TV show?
Another point Damiano made was one I can surely relate to. I also find that family members think I am overreacting to bad television. They think I am too sensitive. Most people feel that children will be exposed to this garbage eventually, or they should not be sheltered from reality. But who’s reality is this? And what are the long-term effects of this kind of exposure?
As is often the case we just sit in front of the TV and accept what is given to us. I don’t know about others, but I do not know people who are as vicious as those I see on television. I don’t know women who are willing to lie and cheat to marry a millionaire they don’t even know.
While I can cite dozens of examples, one show that I feel set the standard of bad family sitcoms was Roseanne. The premise was two dreadfully lazy adults raising children and reinforcing all of their bad behavior while creating lots of laughs to disguise how harmful their parenting skills really are. That is scary.
Ultimately my only solution is using tapes for the younger children and viewing older shows on TV Land.
