Pilgrimage

A look back at past pilgrimages

November 1986 The diocese journeys together for the first time to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in honor of the diocesan’s fifth anniversary. Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, who at the time was archbishop of Newark, served as celebrant of the liturgy.

June 1989 A return to the Washington shrine serves as the highlight of the Marian Year. The pilgrimage included a unique Service for Oppressed Nations and for Justice and Peace, in an effort to promote Mary’s message of peace.

November 1991 The third pilgrimage to Washington was taken to celebrate the diocese’s 10th anniversary. Following the tour of faith, Bishop Edward T. Hughes delivered a blessing of the Fifth Anniversary tablet, which was added to a wall in the basilica’s Memorial Hall. The inscription on the tablet reads: Diocese of Metuchen, established November 19, 1981 and dedicated Under the Patronage of Mary Our Queen by his Holiness Pope John Paul II.

October 1996 The diocese celebrates 15 years, once again in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The 2,500 attendees showed their unity by reciting a prayer of remembrance, celebration and faith written by Bishop Edward T. Hughes specifically for the occasion.

October 1999 The faith community embarks on a journey to Washington for a special Jubilee pilgrimage. Led by Bishop Vincent De Paul Breen, the millennium celebration emphasized the Church’s responsibility in helping to guide the nation, especially regarding the sanctity of life.

September 2001 Pilgrims flock to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for the 20th anniversary Pilgrimage of Faith. The event, which fell on the Sept. 8 birthday of Mary, brought together three bishops who had served the diocese throughout its existence – Bishop Vincent De Paul Breen, who acted as principal celebrant of the Eucharist, Bishop Emeritus Edward T. Hughes and founding bishop Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, who served as homilist.
