Daniel A. Slonim, father-in-law of St. Peter’s CEO

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 9 in St. Joseph Church, Toms River, for Daniel A. Slonim; he was the father-in-law of Sheryl Slonim, president and CEO of St. Peter’s University Hospital. Mr. Slonim died Dec. 5 at age 88.

Born in Paterson, Mr. Slonim lived in Newark before moving to Tom’s River. A plant manager for Exel Screw Machine Co. for 20 years, he later worked part-time as a security guard at Giants Stadium and was also a toll taker for the New Jersey Highway Authority, retiring in 1985.

In addition to his daughter-inlaw and son, Robert, Mr. Slonim is survived by his wife, Nettie Rullis Slonim; two additional sons, Anthony of Cedar Grove and Daniel of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Joseph Slone of Las Vegas; a sister, Tasia Marney of Rhode Island; a grandson, Anthony; three granddaughters, Donna, Michele and Rebecca; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Toms River. Interment was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Toms River.

Edna P. McLaughlin, Cardinal McCarrick’s aunt

Edna P. McLaughlin, 96, aunt of Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of the Archdiocese of Washington, was remembered as someone who had great knowledge and love for her family and New York City, where she was born and lived most of her life.

She died Dec. 6 in St. Joseph Home for the Elderly, Totowa, where a Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 10. She was a member of St. Raymond Parish in Bronx, N.Y., before she moved to St. Joseph Home for the Elderly about 12 years ago, said her nephew, Robert McLaughlin of Spring Lake.

Ms. McLaughlin was a lifelong employee of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City and spent many years living in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. She never married, Mr. McLaughlin added.

In addition to Cardinal McCarrick and Robert McLaughlin, she is survived by a third nephew, John, of Manhattan; nieces Marjorie Mooney of Whiting; Mary Vallone of Long Island; Noreen McLaughlin of the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and Agnes Canale of Arizona.

Cardinal McCarrick, who served as the first bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen when it was established in 1981, was born in New York City July 7, 1930, to Theodore Egan McCarrick and Margaret McLaughlin.

On Feb. 21, 2001, seven weeks after he was installed as the Archbishop of Washington, Archbishop McCarrick was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II.

Josephine DeFrange, 94, mother of diaconate director

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 14 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Krebs, Okla., for Josephine DeFrange; she was the mother of Deacon David A. DeFrange, director of the Office of the Diaconate. Father Leo Ahanotu officiated at the Mass and Deacons DeFrange and Bill Anderson assisted.

Born April 1, 1910, in Trinidad, Colo., Mrs. DeFrange was the daughter of Modesta Crispy. She later moved to McAlester, Okla. and lived all of her life in that area. A member of St. Joseph Parish, Krebs, she married her late husband Silver DeFrange July 15, 1925.

In addition to her son, Mrs. DeFrange is survived by her three daughters, Rita DeFrange and Sylvia Jo Stizza, both of McAlester, and Donna Lewis of Krebs; her son, Joseph DeFrange, Winchester, Va.; her brother, John Crispy of San Jose, Calif.; four sisters, Mary Martin and Louise Patterson, both of McAlester; Betty Harr of Tracy, Calif., and Onerea Bracco, Trino, Italy, as well as 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Brumley-Mills Funeral Home, McAlester, Okla. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, McAlester.
