Felician Sister Emilie Marie Szal, 96

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 8 for Felician Sister Emilie Marie Szal (formerly known as Sister Mary Simplicissima Szal) in Our Lady of Lourdes Hall Chapel, Felician Sisters’ Infirmary, Lodi. She died Oct. 4 at age 96. She had been a Felician Sister for 79 years.

Born in Passaic in 1908, she entered the Felician Sisters’ Congregation in Lodi on July 27, 1925. She made her first profession of vows on Aug. 22, 1927 and professed her final vows on Aug. 20, 1933.

Sister Emilie Marie earned her bachelor’s degree in English and her master’s degree in English from Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; she also earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from Rider College in Trenton. She taught and ministered in elementary schools staffed by the Felician Sisters in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

She served her apostolic ministry in St. Stephen Parish, Perth Amboy, from 1928-30, and in Sacred Heart Parish, South Amboy, from 1930-33.

Because of her declining health, she became a permanent resident of Our Lady of Lourdes Hall, Felician Sisters’ Infirmary, in 1999.

She is survived by her niece, Valerie Marut of Garfield, and by several members of her extended family in various parts of the United States.

Interment was in Felician Sisters’ Cemetery, Lodi.

Filippini Sister Rose Carollo, 93

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 13 in St. Lucy Chapel, Villa Walsh, Morristown, for Filippini Sister Rose Carollo. Father Michael Hanley, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Verona, was the main celebrant and homilist.

Sister Rose died Oct. 11 at age 93. She served her community for 69 years.

Born Jan. 23, 1911 in Palermo, Italy, she entered the community of Religious Sisters Filippini on July 8, 1934 and made her final profession on July 3, 1938.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Providence Teachers College, Providence, R.I., she taught in numerous schools throughout the country, including Most Holy Rosary School, Hopelawn.

Sister Rose retired to Villa Walsh in 1982. Since 2001, due to failing health, she resided in the motherhouse infirmary.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown.

Interment was in Villa Walsh Cemetery, Morristown.
