Mercy Sister Gertrude McDonnell, 86
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 30 for Mercy Sister Gertrude McDonnell.
Sister Gertrude died Nov. 28 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, at age 86, after a long illness.
Born in Port Reading, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1937.
She received a bachelor of arts degree in English from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and a master of arts degree in library science from Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
For 13 years Sister Gertrude taught in Saint John School, Collingswood. She taught at Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, and Saint James High School, Red Bank. After 33 years as a teachers, she retired to McAuley Hall Health Care Center in 1995.
Sister Gertrude is survived by her brother, Robert and his wife Peg, Hollywood, Fla., and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grands.
Funeral arrangements were made by Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung. Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
