Students demonstrate knowledge
Students from eleven diocesan elementary schools recently competed in the Eighth Annual Grammar School Competition, sponsored by Bishop George W. Ahr High School, Edison.
Each school sent a team consisting of sixth and seventh grade students who competed in four events – Jeopardy, modeled after the popular television show; problem solving, developing a strategy to complete a given project; dramatic arts, creating a 90 second commercial, including a jingle, in 20 minutes, and athletics, involving a variety of activities.
In addition, two fifth grade students from each school participated in a spelling bee.
The schools competing in the competition were St. Joseph, Carteret; Immaculate Conception, Spotswood; St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen; St. Matthias, Somerset; St. James, Woodbridge; St. Cecelia, Iselin; St. Matthew, Edison; St. Helena, Edison; St. Mary, South Amboy; Perth Amboy Catholic, Perth Amboy, and Our Lady of Peace, Fords.
Certificates were awarded to the school teams and individual spellers who placed in the top three. The top three teams also received trophies.
This year, St. Matthias School placed first, followed by St. Matthew School and St. Francis Cathedral School. The individual spelling bee winners were Christopher Dowling, St. Joseph School, first place; Emely DeJesus, Perth Amboy Catholic School, second place, and Emily Ludwig, St. Francis Cathedral School, third place.
