Filippini Sister Beatrice Ferrazzano, 85

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Bishop Paul G. Bootskoski Nov. 4 in Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, for Religious Teacher Filippini Sister Beatrice Ferrazzano.

Sister Beatrice died Oct. 31 in St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, at age 85.

A native of Paterson, she entered the Religious Teachers Fillippini in 1931, received her habit in 1936 and made her profession in 1939.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master of arts degree in administration and supervision of elementary education, both from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

A teacher of upper grades, she taught at St. Mary of Mount Virgin School, New Brunswick; Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Orange; Sacred Heart School, Clifton; St. Ann School, Raritan; St. Joachim School, Trenton; Holy Family School, Nutley; Our Lady of Mercy School, Park Ridge; St. Sebastian School, Middletown, Conn.; Holy Rosary School, Cleveland; St. Anthony School, Akron, Ohio, and Sacred Heart School, Stamford, Conn.

Sister Beatrice also served as director of religious education at St. Anthony Parish, Exeter, Pa.; St. Michael Parish, Cranford; St. Anthony Parish, Union City, and St. Gabriel Parish, Saddle River.

During retirement, she lived in Our Lady Queen of Peace Convent, Maywood.

Sister Beatrice is survived by her sister Ann Grochowski and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Filippini Sister Grace Ferrazzano, and by six additional sisters and four brothers.

Funeral arrangements were made by Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown. Interment was in Villa Walsh cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Religious Teachers Filippini, St. Joseph Hall Infirmary, Villa Walsh, 455 Western Ave., Morristown, NJ 07960.

Clement W. Kubian, father-in-law of The Catholic Spirit employee

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 29 in St. Paul Church, Vienna, Ill., for Clement William Kubian, Sr., father-in-law of Nanette M. Kubian, advertising sales representative for The Catholic Spirit.

Kubian died Oct. 24 at his home near Vienna, at age 81.

Born Sept. 11, 1924 in South River to the late Steven and Louise Kubian, Kubian served aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer during World War II and the Korean War. Prior to the Korean War, he wed Helen S. Sisolak in 1949.

Retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1969, he was employed as a sheet and plate metal worker. He served as the chief steward of the Inter national Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Trenton, from 1965-69.

A resident of rural Vienna for the past 30 years, Kubian was a member of St. Paul Parish. He was an avid outdoorsman, and spent much time on his Illinois farm where he raised cattle.

He is survived by his wife; two sons: C. William Kubian, Jr., Monroe, and Mark, Kendall Park; five daughters: Janice Kubian-Bryant, Maryville, Ill.; Theresa Kubian, Blooming Glen, Pa.; Elizabeth Saltzman, Carol Simmons and Christine Ross, all of Vienna; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and two sisters: Marie Halasz and Louise Csirke, Little Egg Harbor. He is predeceased by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.

Funeral arrangements were made by Bailey Funeral Home, Vienna. Interment was in Friendship Cemetery, near Dongola, Ill. Military graveside rites were accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, 1110 N. Johnson St., Marion, IL 62959.

Mercy Sister Elizabeth Riley, 97

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 3 for Mercy Sister Elizabeth Riley (formerly Sister Mary Claudia).

Sister Elizabeth died Oct. 31 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, after a long illness, at age 97.

Born in Philadelphia, she entered the New Jersey Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1928. She received a bachelor of arts degree in English from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and an master of arts degree in English from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

For more than 25 years, Sister Riley taught in parochial elementary and secondary schools in Atlantic City, Lambertville, Rumson, Phillipsburg and Lakewood. She also served as principal of St. John the Evangelist School, Lambertville.

After teaching, she became the director for those entering the Sisters of Mercy. After retiring, she spent some years at Georgian Court College before moving to McAuley Hall Heath Care Center in 1981.

She is survived by her nephew Leonard Schneider and niece Dorothy Toldt, both of New Jersey, and several grandneices and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were made by Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung. Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, Mount St. Mary, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ 07069.
