Deacon Leo F. Clementi, 68, who served in St. Joseph Parish, Borough of Millstone, died Nov. 11 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton.
Deacon Clementi, who celebrated his 25th year as a deacon in May, also ministered in All Saints Parish, Burlington. He was a resident of Columbus for the past two years. Before that, he had lived in Millstone for 33 years.
A viewing was held Nov. 16 in St. Joseph Church. Msgr. Raymond L. Cole, pastor, was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial Nov. 17, also in St. Joseph Church.
Deacon Joe Moscinski, who served with Deacon Clementi in St. Joseph Parish for about eight years, said he admired Deacon Clementi for how seriously he took serving at the altar, especially during the Liturgy for the Eucharist.
“Whether it was a priest celebrating with him or a deacon, we felt comfortable when he was Deacon of the Eucharist because he made sure everything was taken care of,” Deacon Moscinski said.
“It’s also important to remember the service at the altar was connected to the service of charity,” he continued. “He visited the sick, the homebound and prisoners. A special charism of the deacon is to reach out to the marginalized and he was really outstanding at prison ministry. He was a very down-to-earth guy, very direct and that’s what helped sustain him . . . He prayed and discerned (that) it was going to be a major part of his call.”
Deacon Clementi was born in New Brunswick, the son of the late Joseph and Angelina Clementi.
He was owner/operator of Leo F. Clementi Trucking for 42 years before retiring in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Peggy Clementi, of Columbus; four sons, Anthony Clementi of Florence, Angelo Clementi of Staten Island, N.Y., Dominic Clementi of Hillsborough and Vincent Clementi of Ewing; a brother, Joseph Clementi of Franklin Township; two sisters, Phyliss Bissonnette of Kawkawlin, Mich., and Lillian Dudas of Las Vegas, and six grandchildren.
