NaPro Technology: A cause for hope for infertile couples
A recent letter titled “Time for Catholics to take a stand against in-vitro fertilization” [June 8, page 5], highlights some of the many reasons why the Church is against assisted reproductive technology. In response to this letter, a reader might ask . . . what hope can the Church offer to the married couple who suffers the anguish and pain of infertility?
According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, infertility affects more than six million American women and their spouses, or about 10 percent of the reproductive-age population. About 5 percent of infertile couples, including many Catholics, resort to in-vitro fertilization (IVF). In many cases, Catholics are unaware of the immorality of the procedure. In most cases, couples are unaware that there are morally acceptable options available.
What is the Catholic approach to infertility? One option is NaPro Technology (Natural Reproductive Technology), a new medical science which enhances a couple’s chances of conceiving. NaPro Technology was developed by Dr. Thomas Hilgers, director of Pope John Paul VI Institute of Reproductive Technology. This emerging science works cooperatively with a woman’s reproductive cycle and assists men with subfertility by pinpointing and treating the underlying problems, which have frequently been undetected.
By providing targeted treatment, couples are able to conceive naturally through an act of love-making rather than resort to laboratory reproduction. According to Dr. Hilgers, even couples who have attempted IVF multiple times can achieve pregnancy using NaPro Technology. In fact, according to the Pope John Paul VI Institute, the NaPro Fertility approach is two to three times more successful than IVF at helping infertile couples have children, at a fraction of the cost.
In today’s world it is essential that we proclaim the Church’s rich teachings about human sexuality and human dignity. We must be clear, however, that the Church is not against everything! Fertility methods are now available that are very effective, medically authentic and completely consistent with the teachings of the Church. Let’s spread the word!
