Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Giovanna Sabia, 85
A funeral Mass was celebrated March 12 for Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Giovanna Sabia. She died March 8 at age 85, after a long illness in the St. Joseph Hall Infirmary, Villa Walsh, Morristown.
Born in Dunmore, Pa., she entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1945. She received the habit in 1946 and made her religious profession in 1949. Sister Giovanna received a certificate from Villa Walsh Normal School and pursued studies at Seton Hall University, South Orange, and Notre Dame College, South Euclid, Ohio.
Sister Giovanna served the community as local superior and school principal. During her years as an elementary school teacher, she served at Most Holy Rosary School, Perth Amboy, and St. Mary of Mount Virgin School, New Brunswick. She retired in 1999.
Sister Giovanna is predeceased by a sister, Sue Sabia, and by a brother, Bernard Sabia. She is survived by a brother, Vito Sabia of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister, Kathryn Galasso; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown.
